Who you are in the future depends on what you do today. Each moment that you live today, each activity that you do today, contributes to your development as an individual. And it's all making you the person you'll be X years from now.
But what are these things? Are they habits? Are they traits you need to develop? Look no further - here are 12 things you can do today that your future self will thank you for
PS: Make notes if you have to. Let's change that life.
1. Agree to invest in yourself
We spend so much time investing in relationships, professional projects, and commitments and this is a good thing. But we cannot forget that investment in ourselves is as important and probably the most fruitful. So, invest in yourself – with time and money. Give yourself the occasional spa pampering you crave, or skip the boring seminar with office colleagues once in a while and indulge in a book-reading session with a bubble bath. Love yourself and do little things that make just you happy.
2. Find an exercise that doubles as therapy
Find an exercise that you can use as an escape from reality — one to calm you down after a stressful day or refocus yourself after an overwhelming situation. Trust me, it is better than any therapist out there. It will really help keeping your mental peace intact, and your body will thank you in the process.
3. Be alone and be okay with it
Whether you go out to grab something quick to eat or are travelling to Rome, acquiring the ability to confidently spend time alone is essential.
Dependence is never a good thing, but depending on another person for your well-being is self-destructive. Being happy on your own will allow you to reach a level of self-love and appreciation that other people can't supplement. And, eventually, you'll begin to enjoy your own company.
4. Learn to cook something that actually tastes good
It means that you don't have to depend on others to make your meals. It will also give you a sense of independence, freedom, and self-sufficiency. Learning to cook means taking control of what you ingest. It is cost-effective and a great skill to impress your future partner.
5. Travel to new places and take on new adventures
Most of our daily experience is confined to a finite, predictable pattern of places, people, and things. Pushing beyond our norm reveals the world is far more wonderful and unexpected than we realise. Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. You will meet new people, explore new places and experience new wonders. You will make new memories which will surely bring a smile on your face in the years to come. Most importantly, you will have stories of your own to tell.
6. Start saving money
Saving for a rainy day can be as vital as saving for a certain goal. Calling your own shots, financially speaking, means having the freedom to make choices in your life separate from earning a pay cheque and that is only possible if you have your savings to go to. This may mean being able to take a vacation whenever you want to, leaving work and going for higher education or switching careers, starting your own business or investing in someone else's start-up, helping family members, taking on a lesser paying job that is more personally satisfying than financially beneficial, or a big one these days - retiring when you want to rather than working because you have to.
7. Find something to do that you like, and become super at it
You like playing the piano? Or maybe you really enjoy salsa but never thought you were that good at it. Figure out what you love, and do it incessantly. The results will come, rest assured.
8. Smile more, because why not?
Mother Teresa said, "We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do." Smiling actually makes you happier regardless of the situation. The brain, in turn, releases endorphins which lower stress and improve your overall mood, hence making the situation pleasant. But it being a voluntary action, we can actually trick the brain into believing that an otherwise dull situation is actually pleasant by simply smiling. It also attracts attention and creates a positive image for you.
9. Learn a foreign language
Learning a new foreign language flings doors open to a whole new world! You get to discover a whole new culture - music, movies, food, literature, poetry, theatre, fine arts, the list of fabulous things that culture brings to our lives is endless! Besides, it increases your skill set and gives you more international opportunities for studies and work.
10. Learn a form of art
What if, instead of being passively entertained, you could actively engage your mind in something that instead of leaving you empty inside, left you fulfilled and glowing? Art can be anything – singing, dancing, painting, gardening, writing, cooking, photography - there are so many options to explore. It gives you a platform to express your inner feelings and thoughts. Any form of art you choose will surely be an enriching and liberating experience. It's like food for your soul and will definitely contribute to your growth as an individual. You will learn things about yourself you didn't know, during the hours engaged in your creative task. Your thoughts and mindset will shift into a state of complete freedom from stress, anxiety, and negativity.
11. Learn a martial art
One of the biggest advantages of learning self-defence is the way it makes you feel afterwards. The whole point is to prepare you for any situation that may bring harm to you. Physical conditioning is extremely important and training and practicing prepares you for the adrenaline rush when such a situation arises. Looking at the way things are shaping up in the country, learning some form of self-defence is definitely a must!
12. Speak your mind and do only the things that you like
It can feel really bad when you look back on something in your past and think, "I wish I'd said that." You replay the event or situation over and over and kick yourself for keeping your mouth shut when you had every right to say exactly what was on your mind at that very moment. People today are extra cautious about the words that come out of their mouths. Everyone tries to be politically correct so as not to offend anyone else's sensibilities. While it's good to not openly attack or belittle someone else for their thoughts or beliefs, it is not wrong if you share some of your own. Be open enough to share your thoughts and encourage others to do the same.
Whether it's work, friendship or any project or relationship, speaking and doing what you like and think right is one thing that'll definitely benefit you in the long run!
